Catch of the Day: The Ultimate Guide to Seafood in Arugam Bay

Before Arugam Bay was a surf destination, it was a fishing village. And it still is.
If you wake up early enough, you will see the colorful fishing boats landing on the beach, unloading nets full of wiggling silver fish. By sunset, that same catch is on display at the restaurants lining the main street and the beach.
Eating seafood here isn't like ordering off a menu in a city. It is a ritual. It is interactive, it is incredibly fresh, and it is an essential part of the A-Bay experience.
If you are looking for the best grilled fish, jumbo prawns, or calamari of your life, here is how to navigate the seafood scene.
How it Works: The "Market" Style
If you walk down the main street or along the beach after 6:00 PM, you won't need a menu.
Every restaurant sets up a wooden boat or a table filled with ice outside their entrance. On top, they lay out the "Catch of the Day." You will see everything from massive Red Snappers and Parrotfish to Barracuda, Seer Fish, Lobster, and Jumbo Prawns the size of your hand.
The Process:
Look: Walk the strip and compare the freshness. Look for clear eyes and bright red gills.
Pick: Point to the exact fish or prawns you want.
Negotiate: The price is usually based on weight or size. Ask "How much for this one?" You can bargain a little bit here.
Cook: Tell them how you want it. The standard (and best) way is "Grilled with Garlic Butter and Lime." It usually comes with salad and chips (fries) or rice.

Best Spots to Eat
While almost everyone does BBQ, a few spots consistently deliver the best flavor and fair prices.
Tom & Jerry’s Located centrally on the main road, Tom & Jerry’s is legendary for its portion sizes and lively atmosphere. Their seafood platters are massive, often piling calamari, prawns, and fish onto one plate. It’s loud, fun, and always packed.
Arugam Bay Beach Restaurants If you want the romantic "toes in the sand" vibe, head to the beach strip (behind the main road). Places like Friends Indeed or Eagle Resort set up tables right on the shoreline. Eating grilled prawns by candlelight while listening to the waves crash just a few meters away is an unforgettable experience.
Cili’s Famous for their open kitchen and wood-fired oven, Cili’s also does incredible seafood. Their calamari is often praised as the most tender in town never rubbery.

What to Order
Jumbo Prawns: These are often the highlight. They are sweet, meaty, and hold the smoky flavor of the grill perfectly. If you are celebrating, splurge on these.
Parrotfish / Snapper: If you are with a group, get a whole fish. The white meat is flaky and moist. Don't be scared of the bones; the flavor of cooking the fish whole is superior to a fillet.
Hot Butter Cuttlefish (HBC): This is a Sri Lankan classic. It’s battered, deep-fried calamari tossed in butter, chili, and spring onions. It’s not "grilled," but it is the perfect appetizer to share with a cold beer.

Pricing Tips
Seafood is market-price, so it changes daily.
- Whole Fish: Can range from 2,000 to 5,000 LKR depending on size.
- Prawns: Usually priced per portion or per item.
- Platters: A mixed seafood platter for two usually costs between 6,000 – 9,000 LKR.
Pro Tip: Always confirm the final price of the fish before they take it away to cook it, so there are no surprises on the bill.
Final Verdict
Skip the pasta and burgers for at least one night. There is something primal and satisfying about picking your own dinner and watching it cook over an open fire.
Fresh, simple, and delicious this is island dining at its best.
